Race Report

RACE-4 THE DANTE RATING 80-60 (CLASS 2&3) 1200 METRES (35)
DRINKING SPIRIT (W H TSE) was slow to begin.
Near the 850 metres TURQUOISE FAST (N CUNHA) steadied to avoid the heels of KA WANG FORTUNE (APPRENTICE C F WONG) which shifted inwards when not quite clear. Apprentice C F WONG was issued with a reprimand.
Approaching the 150 metres GOLDEN BULLET (A CALDER) steadied and shifted inwards to avoid the heels of GRAND EAGLE (APPRENTICE M CANGAS) which was giving ground.
When questioned in regards to the disappointing performance of FELSHAM, Jockey A SPITERI said he was instructed to ride his mount in a forward position and as such it was able to obtain a nice run just behind the leaders. He said his horse travelled well till the 200 metres and proved disappointing thereafter when placed under pressure. Jockey A SPITERI added that although his horse had previously raced well on a soft track, he felt it was not completely comfortable on the heavy track. He added that in his opinion the horse did not back up from its last start win on 23 September 2011 on the sand track. Trainer A NGAI concurred with Jockey A SPITERI’s comments and added that in his opinion the horse was better suited to the sand track.
When questioned in regards to apparent disappointing performance of LUCKY TWIN STAR, Jockey F DURSO explained that from a wide barrier he rode his horse hard out of the barriers to try and obtain the lead, as in his opinion the horse races better in front. He said he was unable to obtain the lead but he still managed to secure a nice run, however when placed under pressure in the straight it failed to run on. Trainer G W MOORE concurred that the horse races better when it is able to obtain a soft lead and added that the wide barrier and the step up in class may have contributed to its performance. Their explanations were noted.
When questioned in regards to the disappointing performance of GRAND EAGLE, Apprentice M CANGAS said that his horse was inclined to hang out and was also better suited to leading on its own. Trainer G ALLENDORF said that although the horse had raced well on a heavy track, he was of the opinion that it was better suited to a firmer ground however he was disappointed in the horse’s performance. A post race veterinary examination of GRAND EAGLE failed to reveal any significant abnormality. Considering the horse’s performance, Trainer G ALLENDORF was advised that GRAND EAGLE will not be permitted to race for 11 days and until it has passed a barrier trial to the satisfaction of the Stewards.
