Race Report

RACE-4 THE CALCUTTA (TURF) RATING 50-30 (CLASS 4&5) 1500 METRES (431)

8 Triple Fortune (Apprentice Y M Choi) After entering the straight, initially had difficulty obtaining clear running; then near the 200 metres was disappointed when attempting to improve inside 1 Hand By Hand which shifted in and became held up for some distance on the heels of 1 Hand By Hand which continued to shift about; consequently not fully tested.
9 Rush'N Prince (K Abobo) Was slow to jump.
10 Start It Now (A Calder) Jumped awkwardly and inconvenienced for several strides.
12 Top Shooter (W L Ho) Inside the 1400 metres was obliged to steady when tightened for room.

INQUIRY:
The Stewards sought an explanation from Jockey M Cangas into the circumstances in which 4 Elderly Win was ridden to lead in contrast to its previously exhibited racing pattern. Jockey M Cangas explained that he had been instructed to take a sit if possible and after jumping well he had ridden 4 Elderly Win forward until the turn into the back straight from which point he considered his mount had been left in front. Trainer M C Tam confirmed his instructions. The Stewards also sought an explanation from Jockey B Yamzon regarding his riding of 1 Hand By Hand in particular from the vicinity of the 600 metres when he commenced to pressure his mount to improve. B Yamzon explained that he had been instructed to lead if possible and so as to ensure his mount was not overtaken and to go early from the 600 metres. Trainer K W Chan confirmed his instructions.
The Stewards also sought an explanation from K M Lei the rider of 5 Pearl Tahiti as to his reasons for leaving a trailing position near the 1200 metres which resulted in 5 Pearl Tahiti racing wide for the remainder of the event. K M Lei stated he wanted 5 Pearl Tahiti to travel freely without interference and avoid kick back.
After considering these explanations the Stewards broadened the scope of their inquiry to the riding tactics of these riders and adjourned the inquiry to a date to be fixed.

The Stewards inquired into the circumstances in which 12 Top Shooter was forced to steady inside 1400 metres. The Stewards established that 12 Top Shooter was initially taken out onto 6 Marunhangtung by 4 Elderly Win which shifted out and then forced to steady to avoid that horses heels as it continued to shift out. M Cangas was reprimanded and advised although Stewards considered the racing manners of his mount laying out had contributed to the incident. In future it would be expected to make an attempt to correct mounts that commenced to shift ground sooner than he had done on this occasion.

VETERINARY:
1 Hand By Hand (B Yamzon) A post race veterinary examination failed to reveal any abnormalities.
7 Super Smile (Lei Kin Meng) A post race veterinary examination failed to reveal any abnormalities. Trainer K C Hoi was advised that 7 Super Smile will be required to barrier trial to the satisfaction of the stewards prior to its next start in lieu of its unsatisfactory performance.
10 Start It Now (A Calder) A post race veterinary examination failed to reveal any abnormalities.
