Race Report

RACE-5 THE BURNLEY (DIV.2) RATING 60-40 (CLASS 3&4) 1500 METRES (231)

1 Diamond Admire (C Perkins) –Was slow to jump; Making the turn inside the 1400 metres was inconvenienced and taken out contacting 7 Overcome Challenge.
2 Sunshine Cheers (Apprentice C F Wong) –Making the turn from the 1400 metres commenced to race keenly for some distance.
3 Turquoise Song (A Calder) –Making the turn inside the 1400 metres was hampered and its hindquarters were turned out when contacted by runners to its inside.
6 King Pegasus (R Curatolo) –Passing the 1300 metres was inclined to lay out; thereafter continued to race wide for the remainder of the race.
7 Overcome Challenge (L Corrales) –Making the turn inside the 1400 metres was inconvenienced when tightened for room for a short distance.
9 Laughing World (Apprentice Y M Choi) –Making the turn inside the 1400 metres was taken out off its line marginally; Near the 800 metres Rider dropped his whip.
10 Truly Heart (M Cangas) –In the middle stages was inclined to race keenly.

INQUIRY:
Apprentice Y M Choi the rider of 9 Laughing World was questioned as to reason he dropped his whip near 800 metres. He explained that he had loosened his hold slightly and his whip had slipped. He was reprimanded and advised that a future repetition would incur in a penalty being imposed.

The Stewards questioned Apprentice C F Wong the rider of 2 Sunshine Cheers which raced more forward than in recent starts as to his instructions. Apprentice C F Wong said that he has been instructed to go forward and settle in 2nd or 3rd position if possible. He said that after obtaining a position outside the leader passing the winning post on the first occasion his mount commenced to over race when being restrained. Mr. K C Hoi stated that he had instructed Apprentice C F Wong to go forward with the expectation that the horse would settle mid field. The trainer acknowledged that the horse had previously settled behind mid field in races but this was usually as a result of the horse not beginning well. After reviewing the official vision, Apprentice C F Wong conceded that he might have been too aggressive in the early stages resulting in 2 Sunshine Cheers not settling. After considering the explanations both Apprentice C F Wong and Trainer K C Hoi were directed to in future ensure there was full understanding in regards to instructions given.

The Stewards sought an explanation from Jockey R Curatolo the rider of 6 King Pegasus into his reasons for persevering in racing wide during this event. Jockey R Curatolo explained that he had been instructed to attempt to race outside kickback as in the trainer’s opinion at previous starts the horse had not raced genuinely when racing in kickback.

VETERINARY:
2 Sunshine Cheers (Apprentice C F Wong) –A post race veterinary examination revealed that the horse was making respiratory noises.
