1 Golden Wai (M Tanaka) - Commenced awkwardly.
7 Star Of Phoenix (W H Lao) - Performed below market expectations. Rider stated that his mount was one-paced and did not respond to his riding when placed under pressure in the straight. A post race veterinary examination failed to reveal any significant abnormality.
8 Lucky Star (Apprentice A Liu) - Struck the side of the barrier stall as the gates were released and lost ground.
9 Fortune Wai Wai (M Alvarez) - Near the winning post, was hampered when brushed on several occasions by 4 Tian Shan Love (See inquiry report)
10 Laestephe Warrior (K F Choi) - Bounded on jumping, brushed 4 Tian Shan Love and lost ground. Had to be checked to avoid heels after passing the winning post on the first occasion. (See inquiry report)
11 Hyshem (I Poullis) - Shortly after the start, had to be checked to avoid heels of 3 Ronson, which shifted out slightly after getting its head up and racing ungenerously for a short distance. Resulting in it shifting out slightly.
RACING INCIDENT & INQUIRY:
Prior the correct weight, Mr. C W Choi the trainer rider of 9 Fortune Wai Wai (4th past the post) viewed the Stewards patrol videos and lodged an objection against 4 Tian Shan Love (S Nakano) being declared the third place getter for alleged interference inside the 100 metres. It was established that near the 100 metres 4 Tian Shan Love shifted out and brushed 9 Fortune Wai Wai, slightly unbalancing that gelding. Approaching the winning post 4 Tian Shan Love shifted out and away from 2 Twin Cam and bumped 9 Fortune Wai Wai which became unbalanced. Bearing in mind the margin and the proximity to the winning post, the Stewards were not of the opinion that had the interference not occurred 9 Fortune Wai Wai would have finished ahead of 4 Tian Shan Love, and the protest was dismissed and correct weight declared on the Judge’s placings.
Stewards inquired into an incident after passing the winning post on the first occasion. C L Cheung, rider of 3 Ronson, pleaded guilty to a charge of careless riding under MJC Rule 132(i) in that he permitted his mount to shift in when not clear of 10 Laestephe Warrior which had to be checked to avoid heels of 3 Ronson. C L Cheung had his license to ride in races suspended for 2 race days, covering the race meetings of Saturday, 12 August and Friday, 18 August 2023. In assessing penalty, Stewards took into account the level of carelessness and interference, the guilty plea and C L Cheung’s riding record. He was advised of his rights of appeal.
