INQUIRY:
When questioned regarding his riding in the early and latter stages of the race, Jockey M Cangas the rider of 11 Wonderful Express explained that he had been instructed to push forward from the barriers for approximately 70 metres and allow his mount to settle before pushing to the finish. He said that in the early stages of the race his mount which is better suited to 1500 metres was outpaced but under pressure in the straight had ran on well. He stated that over the latter stages he had elected to improve inside 5 China Cheers (L Corrales), however became held up as the horse rolled in towards the fence. After reviewing the official vision and considering the evidence, the Stewards adjourned the inquiry to Tuesday 17th June 2014 at 2:30pm.

The Stewards questioned Jockey R Curatolo the rider of 10 Wine Buddies in relation to his riding after entering the straight until inside the 200 metres and in particular his level of vigor and failure to attempt a run which was available. Jockey R Curatolo said that after entering the straight his mount appeared to be struggling to improve under pressure and he had elected to shift wider in order to see if it would improve without horses around it. He added that from the 200 metres under the whip his mount had run on. After reviewing the official vision and considering the evidence, the Stewards adjourned the inquiry to Tuesday 17th June 2014 at 3:15pm

The Stewards questioned Jockey A Calder the rider of 7 Cool Brother with regards to his riding of that runner in this race in particular the Stewards sought an explanation of his reasons in restraining his mount from shortly after the start and his delay in placing his mount under pressure from the 400 metres. Jockey A Calder said that he had been instructed from the wide barrier and in view of the speed to his inside to attempt to slot in mid field if possible. He explained that 7 Cool Brother had jumped well and after shifting in behind 4 Hanigan (W T Pao) shortly after the start due to the position of runners to his inside he had elected to restrain to obtain cover rather than race three wide. Jockey A Calder conceded that 7 Cool Brother had settled further back than anticipated and said that after obtaining cover leaving the back straight his mount had been taken to a 3 wide position by another runner improving to his inside. He added that 7 Cool Brother had been off the bit for most of the race and had laid out around the turn. In response to the Stewards question Jockey A Calder explained that due his mount’s inclination to lay out he had preferred to be balanced before putting his mount under pressure in the straight. Trainer J Lau confirmed his instructions and stated that as 7 Cool Brother was having its first start for almost 6 months and had not raced previously on the turf track he had not thought to advise the Stewards of the change in riding tactics. After considering Mr. Lau’s explanation he was reprimanded and advised future breaches of Instruction 48 would incur a penalty. The Stewards advised Jockey A Calder that his explanation would be noted, however cautioned the rider that in their view his riding had lacked initiative in the vicinity of the 400 metres and noted that had 7 Cool Brother made appreciable ground in the straight the matter might have concluded differently.
