Race Report

RACE-3 THE MOONEE VALLEY RATING 40-20 (CLASS 5) 1200 METRES (69)

3 River Brightenstar (W T Pao) -Raced 3 wide without cover for the majority of the race; Hung in under pressure in the home straight and proved difficult to ride out; Near the 150 metres bumped with 7 Diamond Match.
7 Diamond Match (R Curatolo) -Near the 150 metres bumped with 3 River Brightenstar.
8 The Tornado (K K Lai) -Was momentarily tightened for room on jumping away between 6 Sharon Treasure and 7 Diamond Match both which shifted ground slightly.
9 Allen's Victory (M Cangas) -Knuckled badly on jumping resulting in its rider losing the use of his right stirrup iron for a short distance.

INQUIRY
When questioned regarding the performance of 8 The Tornado, Jockey K K Lai stated that due to the speed in today’s race he was instructed to position the gelding midfield. He stated that after receiving some minor interference at the start 8 The Tornado was under constant pressure throughout the race and never travelled comfortably at any stage. He added he used the whip on a number of occasions approaching the 400 metres however 8 The Tornado failed to respond and did not finish the race off as expected and in his opinion proved disappointing. Trainer Pat Lee was informed that he would be required to present the horse to the Veterinary Clinic for a thorough veterinary examination on Sunday, 3rd November 2013.

When questioned regarding his ride on 4 Super Dan in particular the amount of vigor between the 500 metres to the 300 metres, Jockey A Calder stated that he was instructed to race in a handy position however he was also instructed not to be caught wide without cover as the horse had not finished its race off at it most recent start. He stated that after beginning well, he attempted to ride forward but due to the speed drawn to his inside, he was of the opinion that he would be caught racing wide if he persisted and he therefore elected to take hold of his mount and obtain a position mid field with cover. He added the pace of the race today was quite quick and as such 4 Super Dan only travelled moderately. He further added that leaving the 500 metres he attempted to niggle 4 Super Dan forward as the gelding was travelling off the bridle and in an endeavour to finish the race off, he was reluctant to place the horse under vigourous pressure at that stage. He added near the 400 metres he commenced to place 4 Super Dan under pressure and near the 250 metres was obliged to shift to the outside of 3 River Brightenstar to obtain clear running and 4 Super Dan then finished the race off strongly. After considering the evidence, Jockey A Calder was informed that his explanation would be noted, however advised him that in future he should ride his mounts in a way that does not leave himself open to question.
